Armed Forces Rememberance Day

Armed Forces Rememberance Day

I am quite pleased to be part of this celebration which honours the memories of our fallen heroes. No amount of tributes would adequately repay the huge sacrifices made by these gallant patriots who paid the ultimate price in the service of our fatherland.

Thus, I join millions of other Nigerians in applauding the contributions of these dead compatriots and extolling the virtues of dedication and loyalty to our dear country as exhibited by them.

As inheritors of the entity which these dead soldiers fought to defend and preserve, we must show by our benevolence to their dependants and dreams that Nigeria, indeed, appreciates their contributions. Only this way can we put to practice that solemn national pledge that the labours of our heroes past shall never be in vain.

Let us keep faith with this commitment to the souls of the departed as a way of reassuring the living especially those still in service and other Nigerians that their country would not forsake those who served it loyally and patriotically in death or in their hours of need.

Today, I stand before all of you to pay my respects to the memories of our fallen heroes and to say to their families that we will forever be grateful for the worthy legacies that your proud parents and/or sons and daughters left behind.

Therefore, I enjoin my fellow compatriots and other philanthropic organizations to offer whatever assistance that will lessen the pains of bereavement for the affected children, widows and other dependants.

Having listened to some of your requests, I want to say that on our part as a Government, we shall continue to support our Armed Forces and the Nigerian Legion to accomplish their set goals to the best of our abilities.

Permit me, at this juncture, to commend the Nigerian Legion, Enugu State Council under the able leadership of Engr. George Amalu for the many bold initiatives it embarked upon with a view to helping the indigent families of our fallen heroes. Your award of scholarships and establishment of Legion farms are giant strides that must be commended.

While it is my singular honour to launch the sale of this year’s emblems, let me also plead with our people and other philanthropists to donate generously towards the 31st Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebrations.

Thank you and God bless.
